I am experiencing difficulty getting any project file exported to Scrivener to open in Scrivener 3 for Mac.  All attempts to open Scrivener exported files produce this message:  "The project uses an older file format and cannot be opened.  Would you like to update it?"

Choosing to update the project produces this message: "The document could not be opened.  Try updating from a backup."

All attempts to update from the backup that was created magically on my desktop during previous attempts to open the file FAIL to open the project file.

What gives?  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there a fix on the horizon?

Thanks.

Hmmm... does this happen with all projects, or just a specific one?  That is, can you create a small test file in The Novel Factory and open it in Scrivener, or do all exports fail?  It's possible our Scrivener export needs adjusting if Scrivener's format has been updated.

If it's only the one project that fails, then it will require further investigation to understand what is different about the project that causes it to fail, before we can fix the issue.  Would you be willing to send us a copy of the novel file to test with?  You can obfuscate your content by using the project wide replace to replace various letters with X and render the text unreadable (although make sure to save a copy of your work beforehand).

I’ve created Scrivener exports from several different NF projects, and have the same experience with them all.

Suggest you check with Katja, since I’ve already sent one of the file sets (the NF project file and its exported Scrivener file) to TNF — twice — with assurance that someone there would have a look.

BTW it is normal for a Scrivener 2 project to require updating when attempting to open it in Scrivener 3. What is not normal is for Scrivener 3 to be unable to open the update.

Hope this helps. Thx.
