In other words, publishers who rigorously vet and edit their releases (sometimes to standards more stringent that the Big 5), who provide their writers with the respect that comes with professional publication by a reputable house, and who also serve writers and readers of works that are not broadly commercial, but are still excellent and important. As a reader, I can say that following any of the folks on these lists is worthwhile. Most offer email subscriptions for announcements of new releases. (Here, "indie" retains its original meaning, pertaining not to self-publishers, but to traditional publishers other than the Big 5.)
