Again, like said elsewhere, what a fantastic piece of software. This is just unimaginably helpful for me. Thank you.

I developed something similar to this back in 2007 using C# .NET and although it was very basic, it had some features I would recommend for in Novel Factory:

  • Dialog Writer: A new window that opens, and when you press enter, a name is suggested based on the characters you have set up, and with the arrows you can quickly select the one you want. A second enter confirms the choice, adds a ':' and you can then proceed to type their dialog (Henry: Good morning sir). A third enter starts a new line and repeats the previous process of choosing a character. When the dialog is complete, you can export either as screenwriter style, or a novel style with speech marks, and you can insert it in the selected scene, or make a new scene out of the result.
  • Sabotage Page available at all times: With writing stories, the imagination sometimes overflows with ideas, and sometimes its best to quickly whip up a notepad and write down some idea, get it out of the way and carry on with what you were doing. I had a little text box in the corner of my app called the sabotage box, that worked like twitter does now. Short messages to yourself, stored in a list. Later you can review them and place them somewhere. You could make something similar with a shortcut like Ctrl+F which opens a popup, type your idea, and close it.
  • Build a set of scenes based on the eight point arc: with one press of a button, the basic eight point arc set itself up in my app as follows: Stasis, Trigger, Quest, Surprise, Critical Choice, Climax, Reversal, Resolution. From thereon I could just dump in all my story ideas and add whatever I needed.
  • List-based overview creation (with sub-plots option): Although NF kind of ends up with such a list with scenes based on the Extended Synopsis, my app started out with such a list, albeit just basic plot points. I think it would add greatly to be able to make the Extended Synopsis with a list making feature, like a chat room, every time you press enter in a textbox, you create another plot point. From thereon you start shuffling stuff around. Although I didn't develop it properly, I wanted to add the possibility of layered plot points that could run parallel to each other like subplots do, or B-stories. That way you can link the points together more accurately to avoid plot holes.
If you want I can send you the app, but its nothing compared to NF! Other than that there are some other things I'd like to recommend:
  • Character Arc overview (incl background timeline): as an added tab in the Character window, maybe add a timeline feature with points of conflict and growth that can be linked to various scenes.
  • General timeline widget: I use timelines a lot for the stories that I write, especially when I write fantasy stories which involve various timelines like that of the characters, the story itself, and even of the regional history. Maybe a general timeline feature could be useful to make all sorts of timelines and that can also be compared so that you can get a much clearer overview of how the events unfold, again, helping you avoid plot holes.
  • Color themes: As mentioned elsewhere, although this is a very trivial thing, my creative environment is very important for me. I'm sure some other people will have the same. I always make my software as dark and mysterious as possible.
Even if you don't get to do any of this, this software is still amazing. Writing stories just became much easier!! I am happy, for sure.

Thank you so much for your feedback - this is really fantastic.

Yes, if you don't mind sending us your app, we'd love to take a look to see how you've implemented some of the things you describe above.

Also, for character arc overview and timeline widget - these are both things we would very much like to add, but are obviously going to take some head scratching to get the right balance of functionality and simplicity. If you could share links to other timelines that you like and give us some idea of what you consider best practice on those, that would really help us in the design stages.

I would say the same for the character arc overview, but I'm not sure there will be much existing out there...

Thanks again!

You're most welcome! Thanks for the reply.

Yes I will gladly send the app! Where can I send the app to?

It might take a while for me to give you a good idea about how I think timelines and character arcs can be implemented. NF in itself is already pretty extensive and I've only just started! I'll be keeping notes and I will forward them to you once i think I have something meaningful. I am getting plenty of ideas but I'll probably oversaturate you with them at the moment haha.

That's great - if you could send it to info@novel-software.com, that would be marvellous.

Thanks again for your kind words, and we look forward to hearing further feedback!
