If you have a custom story skeleton template that you would like to share with other Novel Factory users, please post it here!

Well, there's that Twilight Zone version I came up with. (http://thenovelfactory.discussion.community/post/about-that-twilight-zone-template-8037474?pid=1291608104  I attached the skt file here, just in case.)

I've switched to doing what I really want to do, which is an anthology of short stories. It's going pretty well, but it is a different set of tools than for a novel. In practice, for short stories, I find I'm not thinking in terms of acts so much as the story elements. The notes I wind up using to write the first drafts actually look like this. (I'm keeping each story in a separate .nov file. It's a lot easier to work with them that way than trying to treat them as "chapters.")

Premise: one short paragraph blurb re. the main character and their situation
Title
Issue/Conflict
The Twilight Element (i.e. the supernatural effect or item that drives the action)
Hint:
Point:

Long Summary, i.e. one paragraph per scene.

Re. characters and locations, I'm using those sections after writing the first draft, if I need to keep details straight.

Here are a couple of samples of this breakdown for specific episodes of the original series. (I've been using the same template to analyze episodes. It's come in quite handy. This also works for some of Joyce Carol Oates' or Stephen King's shorter stuff. Probably would work for Hawthorn or even Lovecraft, come to think of it...)

Season 5, Episode 31: The Encounter

Issue: old war loyalties, residual resentments

TE: The locked door

Hint: Psychic insights from the sword?

Point: Conditioning beneath the surface, but the national door is locked. We're stuck with each other. "Their common bond and their common enemy, guilt."

=====================
Season 3, Episode 26: Little Girl Lost

Issue: Missing kid!

TE: "Opening" in girl's bedroom wall.

Hint: "Here, but not here." Animal senses what parents don't. Dog=unconditional love. "Half of you was still here." = emotional baggage. Closed portal -- missed opportunities. "I couldn't even feel you" faith in true friends.

Point: Children's independent identity, a child who is heard, but not seen. A girl who's "loved" (idolized, FRAMED), but invisible.

Sorry for the slow reply, went off climbing mountains in Wales!

Can you please email me at (info@novel-software.com) so I can get more info and find out what's going on?

I also downloaded the zip file for the short story template and got the message that it will not work with my version of The Novel Factory. I am using version 1.22.0.  Has there been another update that I haven't heard about?

thanx,

Loretta

Hmm, sounds like me might have a bug.

Can you confirm you've unzipped the folder and extracted the file?

Just wondering if this issue was ever solved?  I definitely unziped and extracted the file, but it won't load.  It says it won't work with my version of the novel factory.

thanks

I had the same problem.
I found that if you load in the template from the open software rather than the template (which for some reason does open the software invalidly) it does work.

Hope this helps,

Trevor

Thanks for the heads up and solution - Loretta, can you let me know if that works for you?

In the meantime I'll look into the issue of not being able to open directly from the skeleton file.
